I stand against the use of taxpayer dollars for legislative advocacy, as well as the use of tax dollars to pay lobbyists and join associations that lobby.
Taxpayers elect officials to represent our interests, and we should not be forced to fund lobby activities β and especially not lobbying activities that run counter to the interests of the taxpayers, such as spending limits, revenue caps or appraisal caps. As Thomas Jefferson said, βTo compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.β
No interest group that lobbies or engages in political activity should be subsidized by taxpayer dollars. Further, any group testifying before the state legislature should be required to divulge any local, state or federal funding they receive, including membership fees and dues.
In the upcoming legislative session, the legislature should enact reforms which prohibit public funds from being used to lobby or influence legislation, or conduct issue advocacy.
