Under the current property tax system, property owners have seen their tax burdens skyrocket, as the Robin Hood system continues to spread statewide even while the state remains under the constant threat of future school finance litigation.
In order to restore property rights, create an equitable system of school finance, and make homeownership more affordable, it is time for the Legislature to constitutionally eliminate the school M&O tax (providing significant, permanent property tax relief) and fund school operations completely through the existing, fair state sales tax.
All budget surplus dollars should be dedicated to this purpose until the M&O tax is eliminated to ensure consistent reliable funding of schools that doesn't force homeowners out of their homes or drive jobs out of state.
