The Fallout from Proposition Q’s Defeat

Austin Voters Deliver a Mandate for Fiscal Restraint

The city of Austin’s recent budget proposals, following the defeat of Prop Q, are cause for concern for Austinites across the political spectrum. They are proposing massive cuts to funding for Emergency Services and other core functions of government, while increasing spending on pet projects and giving more money to the nonprofits who financially supported the pro-Prop Q political action committee.

Prop Q’s Defeat

In the November 2025 election, Austin residents sent a clear message to City Hall by overwhelmingly rejecting Proposition Q, a ballot measure that sought to permanently increase property tax rates by 20%. This proposed hike, estimated to generate approximately $109 million in additional revenue, was intended to address a budget shortfall and fund initiatives including homeless services, parks, and more. With over 63% voting against the measure, taxpayers demonstrated their unwillingness to bear further financial burdens amid rising costs and concerns over government efficiency.

While this outcome represents a significant win for fiscal conservatism, the city’s subsequent proposed budget revisions have sparked alarm, revealing a fundamental misalignment between voter intent and city hall’s priorities.

Cuts to Core Services

The defeat of Proposition Q has compelled Austin officials to revise the fiscal year 2026 budget, closing a substantial revenue gap without the anticipated tax influx. City Manager T.C. Broadnax presented an updated proposal that includes targeted reductions across various departments, ostensibly to balance the books. However, these adjustments have drawn criticism for disproportionately impacting essential public services while preserving allocations for programs with questionable efficacy

Notably, the revised budget proposes a $6.2 million cut to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and taking $1 million from the fire department. Such reductions threaten response times and operational capacity, as warned by the Austin EMS Association, which has described the service as already “stretched thin.”

A KVUE report detailed the $6.2 million EMS cut, noting that it forms part of broader efforts to address a $100 million shortfall following the proposition’s failure. Similarly, outlets such as KUT and the Austin American-Statesman have highlighted how the defeat signals voter demand for spending restraint rather than tax increases, yet city leaders appear to be responding with punitive measures against voters by cutting core functions. This fundamentally erodes public trust and safety, particularly in a growing city where demand for these services continues to increase.

Austinites Respond

Public discourse on social media has amplified these concerns, with many local voices drawing attention to the budget’s skewed priorities.

For instance, the account @_AustinAdvocate emphasized the irony of slashing funds from ambulances, parks, and courts while diverting resources—including at least $14 million from the Budget Stabilization Fund—to social service projects. This observation aligns with pre-election warnings about potential “nuclear option” cuts, highlighting a pattern of fiscal maneuvering that prioritizes pet initiatives over taxpayer needs.

Likewise, journalist Savanah Hernandez  condemned the allocation of over $3 million to homeless programs amid these reductions, labeling it “criminal.” Hernandez noted that Austin has expended an estimated $609 million on homeless services since 2018, with little discernible improvement in the crisis.

A Growing Trend

This issue plagues municipalities across Texas, and is only increasing with frequency. There is a tendency to expand government programs without rigorous evaluation, often at the expense of core government functions and taxpayer wallets. As reported by the Texas Tribune, even in progressive strongholds like Austin, voters are increasingly resistant to property tax hikes, reflecting statewide trends from taxpayers towards fiscal prudence. The city’s plan to proceed with a 3.5% tax increase (the maximum allowed without voter approval) further illustrates this disconnect, burdening residents without addressing underlying inefficiencies.

Texans for Fiscal Responsibility commends Austin voters for their principled stand against unchecked taxation. Policymakers at every level of government must heed this mandate by curbing wasteful spending, streamlining operations, and respecting the will of taxpayers.

However, the ensuing budget decisions highlight the need for greater transparency and reform like comprehensive audits, and demonstrates the unfortunate attitude that many local officials have towards taxpayers and budgeting: That taxpayers are a bottomless piggybank to fund their spending addictions.
