Press Release: TFR Praises Gov. Abbott’s Special Session Agenda

On Wednesday, July 9th, TFR shared the following Press Release regarding the announcement of Governor Greg Abbott’s Special Session additional agenda items:

Austin, TX — Texans for Fiscal Responsibility (TFR) today praised Governor Greg Abbott for including key taxpayer-first priorities in his call for a Special Session of the 89th Texas Legislature, set to convene on July 21.

“Texans are demanding bold, conservative reforms that put taxpayers first—not bureaucrats or special interests,” said Andrew McVeigh, president of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility. “Governor Abbott’s call to end taxpayer-funded lobbying, deliver real property tax relief, and strengthen election enforcement is a clear win for working families and fiscal conservatives.”

Governor Abbott’s proclamation includes:

  • Legislation prohibiting taxpayer-funded lobbying, ensuring local governments can no longer use tax dollars to hire lobbyists or pay associations that lobby the Legislature.
  • Legislation reducing the property tax burden on Texans and restricting the ability of certain entities to spend more and raise taxes without accountability.
  • A proposed constitutional amendment allowing the Texas Attorney General to prosecute state election crimes, closing loopholes that have undermined the integrity of our elections.

“For too long, Texans have been forced to fund the very lobbyists working against their interests in Austin,” McVeigh said. “Ending taxpayer-funded lobbying is one of the clearest, most popular reforms across the political spectrum—and the Legislature must act.”

TFR also reiterated its long-standing support for reigning in out-of-control property tax growth.

“Texans are being taxed out of their homes, and temporary relief won’t cut it. Voters want long-term reform and spending limits that force local governments to live within their means,” McVeigh added.

On the issue of election integrity, TFR strongly supports expanding the Attorney General’s authority.

“No Texan should doubt the fairness of our elections. Empowering the Attorney General to prosecute election crimes ensures that our laws are not only on the books—but enforced.”

Texans for Fiscal Responsibility urges the Legislature to seize this opportunity to pass meaningful reforms that align with the conservative values of Texans.
