Elections 2024, Property Tax, Texas House

As Laurel Jordan Swift campaigns for a seat in the State House for District 121, she’s positioning herself as a champion for taxpayers.

However, a closer look at Jordan Swift’s personal and financial history reveals a troubling pattern of fiscal irresponsibility and run-ins with the law. Her repeated failures to meet legal and financial obligations raise serious questions about her ability to handle taxpayer dollars.

Swift has a history of unpaid taxes, late payments, and even legal action for tax delinquency. Jordan Swift’s record suggests she is anything but the responsible steward she claims to be. With a history of financial mismanagement and disregard for legal obligations, Jordan Swift should not be entrusted with decisions about how Texas taxpayers’ money is collected and spent.

A Record of Financial Irresponsibility

One of the most alarming issues in Jordan Swift’s past is her failure to pay taxes on time. In 2014, the IRS filed a lien against Jordan Swift for $33,751.89 in unpaid income taxes from 2012 and 2013.

The federal tax lien isn’t the only financial misstep in Swift’s history. Her property tax payments have also been consistently late for over a decade. For example, Swift’s Bexar County property taxes for 2000 and 2001 were only paid after legal action was taken in 2002. Even worse, her Milam County property taxes were late for 12 consecutive years, from 2009 to 2021. Some payments were delayed by as much as a year or more, further reinforcing her pattern of neglect.

She has also been involved in two lawsuits filed by the State of Texas for delinquent property taxes. In 2001 and 2002, Swift (then known as Laurel Grassmuck) was sued alongside her then-husband for unpaid property taxes.

Moreover, one of Swift’s business entities, Eiland Grown, LLC, is currently not in good standing with the state due to failure to file required franchise tax paperwork. This tax forfeiture, filed in March 2023, remains unresolved, further highlighting Swift’s ongoing issues with meeting tax obligations—even in her business dealings.

If Jordan Swift couldn’t manage to pay her own taxes, how can she be trusted to manage the taxes of hard-working Texans? This pattern of neglect demonstrates a troubling lack of responsibility when it comes to handling money.

Legal Troubles: A Pattern of Poor Judgment

In addition, Jordan Swift faced a citation for failing to have insurance in 2011, followed by a failure to appear in court. She was also involved in a 2013 eviction case, where she and a co-defendant were sued by Chevy Chase Apartments. These incidents may seem minor on their own, but together they paint a picture of someone who repeatedly fails to meet basic legal obligations. Jordan Swift’s inability to handle these issues responsibly raises further doubts about her suitability for public office.

Poor Policies

Not only has Laurel Jordan Swift’s past full of examples of poor decisions, but her policy proposals for Texas are just as poor.

Expanding expensive government programs like Medicaid, which could cost billions of taxpayer dollars, and substantially increase taxes, is on the top of her list of priorities. Additionally, she supports spending more taxpayer money on government schools, while publicly opposing efforts to give Texas families greater choice in their children’s education.

Can Texans Trust Swift with Their Money?

Given her history of tax delinquency and legal troubles, it’s clear that Jordan Swift cannot be trusted to manage money and legal responsibilities appropriately. How can voters expect someone who consistently fails to pay their own taxes on time or show up to court, to make sound decisions about how their tax dollars should be allocated?

Swift’s inability to follow through on her financial and legal responsibilities should disqualify her from holding office — especially when that office will have a direct impact on your tax dollars. Texans deserve a representative who respects the law and handles their own finances responsibly, not someone with a track record of neglect and disregard for basic obligations.

Conclusion

Jordan Swift’s campaign promises to be a voice for Texans in the State House, but her past behavior tells a different story.

From unpaid taxes to legal battles, Swift has shown a consistent pattern of irresponsibility and poor judgment. House District 121 deserves someone who will fight for their financial well-being, not a candidate who can’t even manage her own affairs.
