Gambling Scandal Ends Texas Tech QB’s College Career as He Tries To Jump to the NFL

The Consequences

Just a few weeks after the NCAA’s decision to rule Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby permanently ineligible1 for gambling violations, and Sorsby’s resolve to fight the ruling, the saga has taken an unexpected turn.

Sorsby has abandoned his effort to play college football and declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft,2 effectively ending one of the most controversial eligibility disputes in recent college football history.

This comes after months of reporting3 surrounding Sorsby’s admitted sports betting activity and gambling addiction. According to court filings and media reports, Sorsby placed thousands of wagers totaling roughly $90,000 during his college career, including bets on Indiana football games while he was a member of the program. The NCAA ultimately determined those actions warranted a loss of eligibility.

The consequences have been severe: not only for Sorsby, but for Texas Tech as well.

The Red Raiders entered the offseason with many viewing them as a legitimate contender for a College Football Playoff run after assembling one of the most talented rosters in program history. Now, the program must move forward without the quarterback expected to lead that effort. While football is ultimately a team sport, Sorsby’s gambling scandal has dramatically altered the outlook for a season that once carried championship aspirations.

For Sorsby personally, the cost has been even greater. His gambling activity has effectively lost him his final season of college football. Instead of preparing for one last opportunity to improve his draft stock on the field, he now finds himself entering the NFL through the Supplemental Draft: a route typically reserved for players whose circumstances prevent them from entering the regular NFL Draft process.

More Than One Player’s Mistake

Supporters of gambling expansion will undoubtedly point to Sorsby’s situation as an individual failure. But that misses the larger point.

This story is about more than one athlete struggling with addiction. It is about an industry that increasingly targets young people through relentless advertising, mobile betting apps, celebrity endorsements, and promises of easy money. Sorsby is a high-profile example of the predictable consequences.

A Warning for Texas

When gambling proponents push sports betting, they often promise more excitement, greater fan engagement, and new revenue streams for government. The Sorsby saga demonstrates the other (dark) side of the equation.

What began as supposed “harmless entertainment” ended with a talented young athlete losing his college career, entering addiction treatment, and seeing his path to professional football permanently altered. It also cost a major university football program the quarterback around whom its championship hopes were built.
